Personally, I think they should. Pets in heat can be crazy to deal with. Plus, if a pet got out and had more babies, there's a good chance those babies will have to just be put to sleep.
I've seen it happen a lot, especially where there are lots of strays.

I'm mostly thinking cats and dogs, so. Unless the pet is intended as breeding stock you have a responsibility to keep them out of the fights and prevent feral population increases.
Most of the time the babies are just abandoned on the street or sent to the shelter to be put to sleep. I got my second kitten from the SPCA and she was abandoned. I'm starting to think that we should spay and neuter humans, too...

There are far more humane ways to keep animals from mating than chopping their junk off. Spaying and neutering is a lazy solution that requires no effort on your part and fundamentally and permanently alters another living being, against its will, into something it's not. No, they should not be spayed or neutered. It's unnatural, cruel, and irresponsible stewardship. If you're not willing to deal with your pets without mutilating their genitals, you shouldn't have a pet.

You have a really valid point @@ but what are some of the non-lazy ways of controlling a pet's mating behavior? The only ones I can think of are the diaper ones and those diapers can get really expensive.

depends i guess, I myself don't know much about desexing animals, all i know off are the injections for females and chopping of the balls for the guys. (if the first is being spayed let me know xD) but it all depends, i mean if there are other ways to desex them then i don't see why not other than cost wise, some people just can barely afford a desexing opperation let alone a more complicated and humane way of doing it, and as much as i know, the animals don't feel much pain cept the after affects of the operation, and it's pretty humane as it is, i mean it's not like they grab a rusty hacksaw and chop stuff off willy nilly without aneasthetic, but this is coming from someone who is uneducated on the matter.
second part of the argument would come in the type of pet, now if you have a cat that stays inside all the time i'm not sure desexing is much of an issue unless you have lots of cats, same applies to dogs and other animals, the only way i would fully agree to desexing animals would be cats that stay outside, because then you end up with the desexed cat getting pregnant or getting other cats pregnant and end up having stray or feral cats, which is where desexing is important i guess. as for how they are desexed that's another question, if the owners can afford to desex the animals then i see no reason as to why they wouldn't use a more humane way than spayed or neutered, but if it helps keep the number of strays and ferals down it's all good, we have enough strays as it is, not to count all the animals kept in pounds every day.
Good points. Also, yes, it's called spaying for lady animals and neutering for boyz.
